Dance of the Cicada A short film documenting the metamorphosis of a cicada from it's exoskeleton
I've been fascinated by metamorphosis since I was young lad, and with Cicada season in full swing and the remnants of exoskeletons littered on just about every vertical, and sometimes horizontal surface I decided I wanted to try and film this event. What followed was one night thrashing around in the dark and while I got some footage it really wasn't how I planned it, so after a night off I decided to give it another go. Full to gills with coffee I headed back out on the hour every hour to see if I could find a Cicada that was about to climb and make this epic transition. Around 23:30 I got lucky, I grabbed my lights, my camera and set everything up once the cicada had settled on a position (thankfully not too high in the Oak tree it had elected to climb). This night will stay with me for the rest of my days as I was visited by two bush tailed possums, a native owl (ruru, aka morepork) and the milky way shone it's heart out, so much so that I headed back indoors and grabbed my old 5D MKlll to shoot some astro stills. I filmed the possums using this camera too which was an interesting experience as I’ve never really used it for that. Anyhow I hope you like this short film, please let me know if you do, or what you think I could have done better. I didn't stick around until it took flight because it was already 02:30 a.m. and I figured it may well take another hour or two until it managed to summon up the strength to fly, plus at 1/25 second shutter speed for the stills it's doubtful it would have been a pretty shot.
